Introduction

According studies coordinated by UNOCHA (Feb, 2018), Somaliland experienced over four consecutive seasons of below normal rains since Deyr 2015. According to FSNAU post Gu 2017 assessments, below average rains were received in parts of Hawd, East Golis, northwest agro-pastoral areas and Togdheer agro-pastoral regions. Poor rains were also received in Guban Pastoral region and Parts of Northern inlands.

The increasing spatial and temporal variability of the rainy and dry seasons and cycles of floods and droughts results in serious natural disasters. Somaliland has been hit by 15 major droughts since 1960, the most intense occurring in 1973-74, 1984, 1991, 2010-11 and 2016-17.

According to the drought Impact Needs Assessment (DINA) The region depends on livestock for up to 60 percent of its revenue base and 28 percent of its GDP. Somaliland pastoral and agro-pastoral communities food security is heavily depend on livestock herding which recurrently impacted by droughts and other shocks. This category of the population is the majority of the people in Somaliland. its anchor of the country's Economy being on livestock exportation produced by pastoral communities. Extension of Water infrastructure and storage capacity will improve community’s livelihoods and resilience of drought related shocks.

Biyo-fadhisi village is among the villages under Sheikh district of Sahil region. The community are mixed of pastoral and rain fed agro-pastoral livelihoods. Access to water is one of the key challenges faced by the inhabitants of the village. YOVENCO with GIZ engineer visited the village and had discussions with community on their major challenges. It was undisputed that water is the major challenge of the village. The current sources of water are small household berkads established by some individual households who sell the water to wider community. No communal water facility exists except one old water catchment which literally looks like small forest due tries and growth of other plants. It speedily swallows water because of trees and no geomembrane installed in the dam in order to retain the water long. The walking distance to the next communal water resource is about 15 km one way. The village has estimated 100 households with roughly 700 inhabitants and other 500 surrounding pastoral villagers.
